Game ends in stalemate

DAVENTRY are desperately counting down to the end of the season with a squad carrying more players with injuries than not.

But despite this they have held an impressive second place in the league and hope to do so with only three games left.

The push back was slightly delayed due to the opposition having two car breakdowns which hampered the preparation of the Daventry Ladies. The starting line-up was missing a couple of regular players but Daventry managed to field a full team.

It was clear from the start that Rothwell were playing a very tactical game man-marking certain Daventry players out of the game.

The Daventry ladies rose to the tactical challenge scoring first with a clean strike from a delighted Steph which was her first of the season.

From the centre Rothwell were on a mission and responded straight away with a weak goal, curling in at the far post past the startled Karen.

The opposition played the ball around via their key players and battled to win 50/50 balls.

But this did not stop Daventry's attacking game, with Lou and Claire linking well on the right crossed the ball in to Angelina who won a short corner. Roni pushed out to Zoe on strike, with the ball deflected back to Toni who flicked the ball into the back of the net.

Daventry had a really good phase of play with the defensive unit of Mandy, Corrina and Ang resisting all the pressure put on them and an incredible save by the diving Karen. The well-timed tackles and touches allowed a series of passing moves out of the defensive 25.

Mandy passed to Zoe who weaved through the midfield to Roni who found Lou in acres of space at top 'D' and hit the ball home for her first of

the season.

Zoe was also denied her place on the score-sheet by the keeper making a good save at a penalty flick

After a quick half-time

Daventry found themselves under much pressure from Rothwell who continued to surge forward at pace and in numbers, making the injury- prone ladies work incredibly hard.

Rothwell pushed on and it all became too much with the defence out numbered and slotted the ball into the goal.

Daventry seemed a little deflated and running out of steam with all their efforts they tried to play more of a passing game.

Mandy hitting out of defence to Ang who found Angelina who was taken out and off her feet by the keeper. The only decision could be a penalty flick.

Ronaldo stepped up and confidently converted it into the top left corner. Daventry could not hold their lead to the end conceding a further goal in the dying minutes of the game; finishing 4-4 with Daventry glad to take the single point.

Squad: Karen Barlow, Corinna Alphonso, Mandy Thompson, Zoe Smiley, Louise Butler, Ang Jones, Claire Stewart, Toni Lambden, Steph Borthwick, Angelina Bartlett, Ronaldo Blyth and Jo Biddle.
