Report: Saxons proceeded to the next round of the Cup by safely negotiating a tricky home tie against Grammarians of Wellingborough. Saxons took control of match early on and cruised into a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals from live-wire Luke, with the second the pick of the pair, as his run and shot proved too strong for the Grammarians keeper to handle.
Comfortably on top, Saxons defended well when required, but a disallowed goal just before the break for offside galvanised Grammarians, who exploded at the start of the second half withtwo quick goals to pull level at 2-2.
Saxons were rattled, but regained their composure and the lead when Joe stepped up when it mattered and unleashed a long range free-kick which left the goalie scrambling. Grammarians pushed forward in search of an equaliser and Decklyn had to be athis very best to preserve Saxons’ lead when he turned a point blank shot around the post.
From this vital save, Saxons broke free down the right and Jonny’s cross-come-shot deceived the Grammarian goalkeeper at his near post to restore Saxons’ two-goal lead. Grammarians hadn’t given up yet and following a goal mouth melee grabbed their third, but Saxons’ Cup victory was finally secured when Dylan broke free from the kick off to ensure Saxons deservedly went through to the next round.
The man of the match awards went to Joe, Josh, Luke and Decklyn.
