Battling Woodford United came up narrowly short at Alfred Street on Tuesday night as a single goal saw them lost 1-0 to Irchester United.

Jordan Pendered won the contest for the Romans two minutes before half-time.

It may have been a defeat, but it was a welcome return to some sort of solid form for Mitch Austin’s men, wh0 had lost their previous two matches heavily.

They followed up last midweek’s 6-0 beating at the hands of Harrowby, with an 8-0 Byfield defeat to St Neots Saints.

The match was all over by half-time, with Woodford trailing 6-0.

For St Neots, Karl Safee hit a first-half hat-trick and took his tally to four after the break.

This Saturday Woodford will be aiming to build on the more solid defensive display they turned in against Irchester.

The Reds entertain a Wellingborough Whitworth side that are currently fifth bottom in the UCL Division One, and have lost 14 of their 20 fixtures to date.
