Leaders Lawford were made to fight all the way by Casey’s in their Rugby and District Sunday League Division One clash, but the table-toppers won 4-0.
The score is a scant reflection on the effort put in by every one of Casey’s players.
Casey’s were weakened as some players failed to find the venue, and facing the prospective champions would be a formidable challenge even with a full-strength Casey’s first team .
Lawford led 2-0 at half-time, but credit to Casey’s defence, with Richard Mansell in outstanding form in his new role as goalkeeper and Kasongo, Consentino and Shackelton outstanding.
It was two late goals that eventually sunk Casey’s.
There should be no problems this week over missing transport as Casey’s face another difficult encounter against Community Relations at Staverton Park on Sunday (ko 11am).
There was better news for Casey’s Reserves as they were 4-1 winners in Northampton against Abington Stanley in the NFA Shield.
The travel problems that blighted the first team had a knock-on effect and Casey’s were forced to play short for the first half.
Despite this disadvantage, it was 1-1 at the interval thanks to a superb all-round defensive performance and a goal from Tony Burkett
The second half saw Casey’s field a full team, and goals from Sam Burke, Tom Sparks and Alex OConnor saw Casey’s into the next round.
This Sunday, Casey’s Reserves travel to Dunchurch.
