WOODFORD United Football Club’s youth development policy has proven to be a success story.

The Byfield Road outfit say most other clubs judge success by the league position of their first team, but they go further.

The Reds have put the development of youth players alongside the continuation of Southern League football, which was again achieved.

When Woodford United set up their new youth development policy in May 2011, the aim was to develop young 16 and 17-year-old footballers and hopefully see them progress.

And in its first year it has seen:

n Koby Arthur (16) – sign a two-year scholarship with Birmingham City;

n Robson Kightley (16) – played four games in the Southern League and is currently on trial at Cambridge United;

n Elliott Herbert (16)– eight-week trial with Burton Albion;

n Kody Asamoh (16) – currently on trial at Birmingham City;

n A total of 10 players represented the Northamptonshire County U18s team;

n Eight of the clubs U18s team players have played in the Southern League.

In addition to the excellent player development opportunities, Woodford are now committed to the further development of all players.

They have linked up with Moulton College and are offering a two-year course in Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences.

The course is open to all players from 16 to 18-years-old. To be eligible, the entry requirements are four GCSEs grades A – C.

Woodford United will give all players the opportunity to progress.

Teams: U16s (Midland Junior Premier League); U18s (Midland Junior Premier League); U18s (Northants Senior Youth League); Reserves (United Counties Football League); First Team (Southern Football League).

There are also exit routes to numerous professional football clubs.
