Daventry Town’s encouraging form continued on Saturday as they drew 1-1 at Marlow in the Southern League Division One Central.
Striker James Tricks scored the all-important goal for Allan Smart’s men, firing home a 79th-minute equaliser to cancel out Marlow’s 55th-minute opener.
Town goalkeeper Ben Heath was also a key man in the victory, making a string of saves, including two stunning ones in the closing minutes to deny Marlow pair Charlie Bull and Lee Barney.
The draw means Daventry are 17th in the table, but are now a more than handy 16 points clear of the relegation places.
Former Kettering Town and Rugby Town goalkeeper Nick Bennion started between the sticks for Marlow, and Daventry welcomed back one-time captain Aaron Parkinson alongside former Diamonds team mate Jamal Clarke in a Town team missing three key players because of suspension.
Much of Daventry`s attacking threat throughout the game came appeared to come from the long throw in of Ricky Hill and captain Ashley Deeney, but it was a curling cross from Deeney to Robbie Cundy which gave Daventry their first opportunity to attack the Marlow goal, Cundy meeting the cross and narrowly placing his header past Bennions far left post on 17 minutes.
Daventry should have made something of another Deeney cross which was allowed to pass directly across the face of the goal without anyone being able to get a touch to it and Clarke had a header turned around the post by Marlow keeper Bennion minutes before the break.
Ten minutes into the second half Marlow edged in front, Jamal Branker`s free kick was knocked back out to Barney who reacted quickest and struck the ball past Heath in off the post.
The game opened up in the final 20 minutes as Daventry sought an equaliser which came courtesy of striker Tricks who coolly picked his spot and side footed a shot past Bennion after team mate Anthony O’Connor had seen his shot blocked.
With 10 minutes remaining, goalkeeper Ben Heath made a point blank save to deny Marlow striker Bull with a powerful header and then turned another powerful effort from Barney around the post from the resulting corner, earning the young keeper a deserved man-of-the-match award.
Daventry became stretched at the back as they pressed forward looking for a winner but will have been satisfied with their point and a second match undefeated.
Daventry are back in action tomorrow night (Tuesday) when they travel to promotion-chasing Aylesbury FC, before entertaining Aylesbury United at Communications Park on Saturday.
