Daventry Town emphasised their improvement under the management of Allan Smart with Tuesday night’s 3-1 win over Chalfont St Peter.

Smart’s first game in charge of Town back in November saw them lose 4-1 at Chalfont - but there was never any danger of a repeat of that result, especially after Arron Parkinson had fired Daventry into a first-minute lead.

Chalfont have endured a wretched start to 2015, scoring just one goal since the turn of the year ahead of Tuesday’s game - and that was an own goal - and the defeat to Town was their second biggest of the season.

Daventry welcomed back midfielder Ryan Howell after completing his three match suspension, having been sent off against Kettering Town in December.

New signings James Hancocks from Racing Club Warwick was on the bench and Harlan Basker from AFC Wimbledon started.

In Town’s 4-1 defeat at Chalfont, Josh O’Grady scored a consolation goal late in the game for a Daventry team which consisted of an assortment of young academy players and a sprinkling of more experienced players.

On Tuesday, Saints were undone by two goals credited to Parkinson although his second may have been an own goal.

Daventry went ahead in the first minute, Parkinson getting on the end of an Ashley Deeney’s corner at the far post to put Town ahead within forty seconds.

Town almost went 2-0 up after 16 minutes, when another pinpoint corner by captain Deeney was met by Parkinson again, but this time new signing Harlan Basker’s flick on was blocked on the line.

After 25 minutes Andrew Musungu almost scored direct from a corner, but Saints’ keeper Pearce tipped it away from goal to Howell, who struck the ball just over the crossbar.

Parkinson scored what was credited as his second, but the player was honest enough to admit after the game: “It was an own goal, unfortunately, the defender took it off my head!”

That goal sendt Town into the break with a comfortable lead, but Chalfont pulled a goal back five minutes into the second half after Saints were awarded a penalty kick when Ricky Hill was judged to have fouled Alex Paine.Adam Louth converted the kick.

Basker was replaced by James Weale and it was the former Rugby Town player who was bought down in the penalty area late in the game after receiving a perfect through ball from substitute Hancocks and Howell scored from the spot to wrap up all three points.

On Saturday Daventry travel to Northwood with midfielder Craig McKay returning from his four-match suspension.

For the first time in four matches Daventry Manager Allan Smart should have a full squad to choose from.
