The 40-year-old replaces former boss Darran Foster, who quit the club last week after the playing budget had been cut.

Smart, who had a short loan spell at Northampton Town in 1996, helped Watford gain promotion to the Premier League in 1999/2000 and scored 12 times in 56 appearances for the Vicarage Road outfit before leaving in 2001.

More recently Smart has been coaching part-time at Blackburn Rovers’ academy.

Smart will be assisted by former Daventry manager Ady Fuller. Fuller took Daventry into the Southern League as champions of the United Counties League in 2009/10.

Fuller was later asked to step aside and was replaced by former Republic of Ireland international Mark Kinsella.
