Day: Bath's position is surprising but Saints won't understimate them

But he has warned his Saints team-mates not to underestimate them at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday.

“You look at their resources, their coaching setup, their team that goes out week on week, and they’re a quality outfit,” Day said.

“They finished second last year and to see them where they are is very surprising, but that’s not to say that on their day they can’t turn up and put in a good performance.

“We’re preparing for a good Bath team to come here this weekend.

“With a backline with Jonathan Joseph, George Ford, Semesa Rokoduguni, you’ve got to take them seriously. If you don’t, you’ll lose by 40-odd points like Leicester did last year.”

While Bath were playing their rearranged league game against Sale Sharks last Saturday, Saints had the weekend off.

And Day feels it was necessary as some of his side’s walking wounded patched themselves up for the final two Premiership games.

“It’s been a pretty brutal season with all the injury problems we’ve had,” the lock said.

“It was our first weekend off for six or seven months and it was good to have that.

“We’ve got a few guys back on the pitch who have got rid of some niggles, so we’ll have a good team out at the weekend.

“It is a boost for us.

“It’s no discredit to the guys who have come in because they’ve performed really well, but when you take six, seven, eight guys out of the team who are regulars, it’s difficult to gel.

“It’s always good to have your internationals on the pitch, which we seldom have had this year.”
