The County today announced that Alex Wakely would take charge of the club captaincy next season taking over the reigns in four-day cricket from Stephen Peters.

He will be backed up by all-rounder David Willey who takes on the vice-captain’s role.

And Ripley believes the young duo will give the side fresh impetus as they look to bounce back from LV= County Championship relegation.

Given our relegation from the first division we decided it was time we looked at a longer-term view,” Ripley said.

“With Alex and David taking it on I think we have got a good pairing in charge.

“They are good friends and both of them have very good cricket brains.

“We have seen how well Alex has done in the one-day game as captain and now he is keen to develop his four-day captaincy.

“David might not have been everyone’s first choice for vice-captain as he wears his heart on his sleeve and hasn’t always got things right.

“But he talks a lot of sense when you discuss cricket with him and he is ready to bring a bit more to the table.

“I think the extra responsibility will see them both blossom.”
