On day three at Headingley, the visitors made 149-4 in what play was possible and will start the final day still 216 runs in arrears.

The late dismissals of Matthew Spriegel and James Middlebrook, the latter making a definat 63, didn’t help the County’s cause after they had battled to 132-2.

The forecast for Wednesday isn’t particularly good but the hosts will fancy their chances of wrapping things up.

On a truncated day with bad light and rain forcing 47 overs to be lost, Stephen Peters fell early, caught at the wicket off Ryan Sidebottom, after the visitors followed on.

Middlebrook and Kyle Coetzer, in the first stand of any meaning in the game, put on 89 for the second wicket before the same manner of dismissal saw off the Scotsman for 39.

Jack Brooks then got in the act by trapping Spriegel in front and then providing Andrew Hodd with his third catch of the innings to see off Middlebrook shortly before the close.

That brought in nightwatchman Maurice Chambers to join Rob Newton and the pair survived until the close.
