Newton provided everyone with a lesson, says County skipper Peters

Rob Newton provided a “lesson for all of us” following his match-saving innings against Durham according to Stephen Peters.

The middle-order man batted for in excess of three hours for an unbeaten 48 as he steered the County to a draw after they had been left with nine overs to survive with only one wicket remaining.

It was an uncharacteristic effort from Newton who normally ticks along at a far quicker rate, but County captain Peters, who continually preaches a method of staying in the contest, thinks it is something that his side should take notice of.

He said: “Cricket is all about playing the situation and Rob did that very well.

“He had to curb his natural instincts which are to play a few shots and it showed that you just can’t go out there, especially against top quality bowling, and say that ‘this is how I play so I’m going to do it’.

“I was really pleased with how he played in a difficult situation.”

On the batting side of things, there were other positive contributions through the top order with only Andrew Hall of the top six failing to add anything meaningful.

And Peters, who made a half-century himself in the first innings, reserved praise for his opening partner James Middlebrook and Matthew Spriegel.

He continued: “Spriegs hasn’t batted at four for us before and we were all gutted for him when he couldn’t quite get to a hundred.

“And James, to get a five-for and a couple of scores in the forties was a good effort and it was pleasing to see in the first game.”
