Their LV= County Championship encounter with Sussex saw them endure another tough time in the field as they watched their opponents pile on 209-3 by the end with Luke Wells unbeaten on 91 after four hours at the crease.

It means the gap between the sides is 283 runs with three sessions left of the game and the campaign.

The bowlers toiled with Mohammad Azharullah at least grabbing a couple of victims at the cost of 41 runs.

Rob Keogh had earlier moved his third first-class hundred on to 129 before he was the last man out.

Northamptonshire were finally dismissed for 294 with number 11 Azharullah aiding Keogh and frustrating Sussex for three-quarters of an hour in a welcome show of resistance before the end.

With the last hope of a victory gone, and the record-low points score in Division One of the Championship an unwelcome landmark secured, it is doubtful anyone at the County Ground will be too disappointed to see the stumps pulled out tomorrow night.
