Daventry United's FA Vase tie at Rushden was a scrappy all-UCL affair but Darran Foster's men did just enough to earn another crack at arch-rivals Daventry Town in the first round proper next week.
The all-important goal came from Todd Sawko after a defence-splitting pass from Leigh Roberts in the 69th minute of an evenly-balanced contest. Presented with a one-on-one Sawko neatly sidestepped the Rushden goalkeeper to score.
Scoring chances w
ere otherwise few and far between at both ends with Foster admitting: “It was a scrappy game and we were not at our best with both Lee Reynolds and Sam Bourne absentees.”
“We were all over the place at the back in the first-half but got our act together after the interval with goalkeeper Ryan Whittle near-perfect with his handling.”
Even so Zac Fotheringham earned the man-of-the-match accolade for his tireless work up front on a day when the Motormen felt they should have been awarded a cast-iron penalty.
“The offence took place three yards inside the box but the linesman said it was outside and instead signalled for a free-kick,” added Foster who is eagerly waiting the return with Daventry Town.
This Saturday United travel to Corby to take on Phoenix in the first round of the NFA Junior Cup competition. Still unbeaten in the UCL First Division, United will not return to league duty before October 11.
