WOMEN'S football is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and its popularity was clearly shown by the record 11 teams taking part in a tournament at Woodford Halse School.
Woodford Halse A and Newnham progressed comfortably in group 1 while in group 2, Woodford B caused a surprise by holding Middleton Cheney to a 1-1 draw with both teams getting through to the quarter finals.
Greatworth won group C with wins over Woodford C and Kings Sutton who won a close game against Woodford C 1-0 to take their place in the quarter finals.
St Lawrence A squeezed through with wins against Aston-le-Walls and Chacombe. Aston and Chacombe drew 0-0 and could only be separated by the toss of a coin with Chacombe making the right call to go through.
Woodford A had a 5-0 win against Kings Sutton and the local derby between Middleton and Chacombe looked to be headed for a stalemate until a long range lob from the wing settled the result in Chacombe's favour.
The Greatworth versus Newnham match ended in a draw and was eventually decided in Greatworth's favour by penalties. Woodford B put up another good show before going down 1-0 to St Lawrence A.
Greatworth held St Lawrence A to a 0-0 draw and survived the initial penalties only to go out on sudden death.
In the second semi final Chacombe soaked up huge amounts of pressure from Woodford A and looked dangerous when coming forward themselves.
Chacombe thoroughly deserved their 0-0 draw but a combination of good shooting and impressive goalkeeping from Woodford A saw them go through 2-0 on penalties.
In the final shortly after halftime Amy Smith's set up a simple chance for Kate Peacock to give Woodford a 1-0 lead which they held to the end to retain the Championship trophy.
Thanks were expressed to Trudy Thornton, Chris Bazeley, Daniel Worrall and Ken Hartley for refereeing the tournament.
