Weather woe kicks matches into touch

Frozen out: This was the scene at Communications Park on Saturday where Daventry United were due to play Holbeach. Not surprisingly the game was called off along with many others throughout the Daventry district.

THE Big Freeze brought a weekend of chaos to the Daventry district with the sporting calendar badly affected in the aftermath of plunging temperatures and rock solid frozen grounds.

The weekend’s Non-League football programme was a big casualty of the freezing weather throughout the length and breadth of the country and matches were almost all wiped out.

The result of the postponed fixtures will be a snarl-up of games later in the season as the title battles begin to warm up.

A sprinkling of games did get underway. You could have travelled to Fleetwood in Lancashire to witness the 1-1 draw against Newport County in the Conference League or closer to home almost an hour’s play was possible between Luton and York before the referee called a halt.

But it was not just football that suffered at the hands of the weather as Rugby matches were also called off as the freezing conditions really began to bite.
