PLANS for a Tesco Express in Weedon have been rejected by Daventry District Council (DDC).
The supermarket giant was planning to build the store alongside three one bedroomed flats and three two bedroomed flats on the site of The Globe Hotel on the A5/A45 crossroads.
However, planning officials from DDC have turned down the application stating that eight parking places for six flats is not enough and that access in and out of the site was poor and could lead to danger with people using the crossroads.
Weedon Bec Parish Council had objected to the plans. It believed the site was inappropriate for people to access and raised concerns over the safety of people trying to get to the new store. There were fears from local businesses that some smaller traders could have been forced out of business.
The news has been welcomed by some of the traders but there are fears the supermarket giant will resubmit their application in the near future.
The owner of Tudor Greengrocers in the village Jane Lovell said: “I was shocked, this is really good news for everyone.
“However, I think they will try again. It is one of the things that could take years to happen so we will just have to play the waiting game but it was nice to hear the news.”
