A new community room to be used by groups in the area has been officially opened by a town supermarket.

The new room at Tesco in New Street was opened by the Mayor of Daventry Cllr Ron Fox on Monday.

Attending the event was teachers and pupils of The Grange School in Daventry and Weedon Bec Primary School. Youngsters from both schools submitted winning entries in a competition launched by the supermarket giant to design a piece of artwork for the room.

Michele Hawes, counters manager and community champion for the store, said: “The community room will be used for our Farm to Fork trail that we run for all children of primary school age, whether that be through a school visit or if they are in clubs such as Beavers or Cubs.

“We will also be letting local groups use this room free of charge if they require it for a meeting or similar event.

Managers and staff at the store transformed an office into the community room after raising money for paint and new carpets.

Ms Hawes added: “It really has been a real team effort.”
