Northamptonshire Police say the leak was caused by a car colliding with the gas main. Newton Close and Sopwith Way had been closed and workers evacuated on a Daventry industrial estate after a gas leak.

However the roads have now opened and police have thanked everybody in the area for their patience and co-operation during the incident.Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said a high pressure gas main was leaking and this led to an evacuation of nearby units. . Holes had to be cut in fences to allow people to evacuate the site without walking through the cloud of gas.

Staff at Daventry and District Housing were evacuated as a result of the incident with phones diverted to Futures Housing Group base in Ripley.
