DAVENTRY Town Council (DTC) may have acted illegally by giving funds to a group fighting to prevent development on a playing field in the town.
The revelation came at a special town council meeting held on Monday where it was decided to give, in principle, the Friends of Daventry Open Spaces (FODOS) extra money.
FODOS has submitted an application to register the Eastern Way Playing Field as a town green.
This would prevent development on the site currently earmarked by Daventry District Council as the site of the canal and WaterSpace.
In November last year, DTC gave FODOS £850 towards legal fees to help register the town green application. The authority has been told it can not pay third party’s legal fees.
