People can try their hand at sailing on one of Daventry’s reservoirs at a free open day in May.

The Rugby and Daventry Sailing Club, based on Drayton Reservoir off the A361 in the town, will be offering a ‘try sailing day’ on Saturday May 9 as part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Push The Boat Out campaign.

People can go along between 2pm and 4pm to try sailing in one of the club’s boats. Visitors are advised not to wear anything they mind getting wet, and to bring a towel and change of clothes just in case.

Gareth Brookes, RYA regional development officer for the Midlands, said: “We’ve already enjoyed incredible weather this year, and there’s no better way to enjoy the summer than being on the water.

“Sailing can be as physical or relaxing as you want it, while watching the sun set over the water with a drink after sailing’s done is one of the sport’s hidden appeals. Tens of thousands of people across Britain will be ‘pushing the boat out’ in May, we would love you to among them.”

Hollowell sailing club will also be holding an event on May 9 at Hollowell Reservoir near Guilsborough. While Banbury SC at Boddington Reservoir will hold its open day on Sunday May 3.
