Plans for a new skate park in the centre of Daventry, developed by the town’s own young people, will be discussed by the council tonight.
The application is to remove the existing skate ramps on the New Street Rec and replace them with a modern skate park.
The planned skate park has been designed by Wheelscape, the same team behind the new facility in Northampton’s Abington Park, with input fromDaventry’s young skaters.
Finn Pickard runs the skate park at the town’s Phoenix Centre.
He said: “Me and the other young people have been involved in this project right from the start.
“A campaign was started to get a better facility on the Rec. Then we and Daventry District Council asked for tenders for the work, which came back with the designs.
“We went for a design that has street skate features on one side, with rails and other things, and on the other is verts – the curved walls.
“It’s been fantastic to be involved in and it should be great for Daventry.
“The one in Northampton gets loads of people going to it. I just hope that the town council gets behind it.
“People always say there’s not enough for young people to do in Daventry; well the young people have now drawn up something they want here and it needs supporting.
“Once we have permission, the building work won’t take too long – only a month-and-a-half from when they start on the site.
“We need to start work by May due to a time limit on the money we have.”
