Northampton’s Royal & Derngate scoops prestigious UK Theatre Award

The Made in Northampton performances produced by Royal & Derngate has won a prestigious UK Theatre award.

At Sunday’s UK Theatre 2015 Awards ceremony, Royal & Derngate scooped the Management Award in the Best Presentation of Touring Theatre category, for its Made in Northampton co-produced work.

Royal & Derngate has taken its productions around the country, working in collaboration with a number of partners over the last year. Work has included co-productions with Northern Stage, Royal Exchange Theatre, Music & Lyrics Ltd, Touring Consortium Theatre Company, Shakespeare’s Globe and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse. Productions have ranged from the classics King John, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Cyrano de Bergerac and the musical Oklahoma! to the world premieres of Pat Barker’s Regeneration and Arthur Miller’s The Hook.

Royal & Derngate artistic director James Dacre said: “Northampton has always been known for its export industries and so it’s thrilling that theatre productions made here in Northampton have also been recognised for making an impact nationwide. This past year, six ambitious productions ‘Made in Northampton’ have toured to 37 venues nationwide across 30 towns and cities, playing to 197,000 people in a wide range of places, from concert halls and proscenium arch theatres to cathedrals and outdoor spaces. We’re proud to have partnered with so many great organisations and would like to thank all our audiences for their support.”

The UK Theatre Awards are the only nationwide awards celebrate outstanding achievement in theatre throughout the United Kingdom. The UK Theatre Award management categories were created in 2005 to champion and applaud the successful business initiatives and acumen of performing arts organisations.

The award was presented by actress Anne Reid at a lunchtime ceremony on Sunday at London’s historic Guildhall.
