New football initiative to target town crime

STREET football sessions will be launched in the Daventry district to help curb crime and anti-social behaviour.

Daventry District Council (DDC) has awarded more than £4,500 in funding for the programme, which is aimed at youngsters aged between 11 and 19.

The football sessions will run during the school holidays in Long Buckby, Woodford Halse and the Southbrook estate, culminating in a street football tournament.

They are due to start in April this year, but no official date has yet been set.

In total DDC is providing £4,566 of second homes funding to Daventry Active Ltd to run the programme over 12 months.

The second homes fund has come from reducing council tax discount on second homes from 50 per cent to 10 per cent across the county.

This agreement between DDC and Northamptonshire County Council has resulted in a pot being available to support community projects.

Cllr Alan Hills, community, culture and leisure portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council, said: “The project aims to use sport as a tool for social cohesion by providing quality football coaching, issue-based learning experiences and, most importantly, a safe and enjoyable environment for them to play in.

“The sessions will run throughout the year before finishing with a tournament, and I hope that lots of youngsters give the sessions a go and have a great time.”
