Daventry’s university technical college (UTC) building was officially topped out on Friday September 13.

The event was marked on the site, off Ashby Road, by dignitaries from the construction team, the UTC staff and councillors.

UTC principal, Dave Edmondson, said: “It looked brilliant; it’s a fantastic building.

“It will give an outstanding learning experience for the young people with a mix of academic and technical sides to the curriculum.

“The building is constructed with modern techniques and will be energy efficient, so the building itself will become a teaching tool and ties right in with our speciality of sustainable and related new technologies in engineering, sustainable construction, and environmental sustainability.”

Steve Davies is principal at Moulton College, a key supporter of the project. He said: “I’m really thrilled with the building, and delighted that we have got to this stage after three years of hard work in designing the building and then designing the curriculum. And now the first students have started their studies, and the building is almost complete; that vision we had is now coming to fruition.”

Although the college building is still under construction, the first students have started classes held at the University of Northampton. In the years to come it will increase in size to 600 students.

County councillor Robin Brown said: “It’s a really fantastic investment in the county and Daventry district in particular. I’m delighted at the premises and am looking forward to when the first students walk through the doors in January.”

DDC leader Chris Millar said: “This is great news for Daventry. The building is fantastic; it’s larger than I imagined but it is set into the slope and trees very well.”
