Youth centre open new kitchen in Daventry
Volunteers, contractors and funders celebrated the opening of a new kitchen at Daventry’s Phoenix Youth Centre on Friday.
Representatives of the centre, local councils, businesses and other groups were at the centre for a special lunch to mark the occasion.
The new kitchen was funded by a Transform It Lottery grant of £15,000 secured by DHL.
Volunteers from DHL then worked with youngsters from the centre to help with the renovation of the kitchen.
Elaine Bedford, president of the youth club, said: “There was a kitchen before, but it was very old and under-equiped. So that limited what types of food could be made here.
“This new kitchen will enable us to provide a higher standard of food preparation and help our young volunteers towards healthy eating.
“It’s a fantastic new facility for our young volunteers and leaders.
“Our young volunteers and leaders organise a café here so the new kitchen will be of use to them as they’ll be able to prepare a wider variety of foods, that are also healthier.
“They were involved in the project from the start in terms of discussing what facilities they’d like to see.
“In time we’d like to see the café do more things with the possibility of it becoming a social enterprise.”
The Phoenix Centre, off Ashby Road, runs a youth club and encourages young people to organise and stage their own events, including music nights, the café, and gigs. It also hosts several activities and clubs for young people, including gymnastics, judo and boxing clubs.
The kitchen project saw the youth centre receive support from several different Daventry firms as well along with DHL.
Mrs Bedford said: “We got support from Howdens Kitchens who helped us with selecting the units and gave us a really good price. Alpine Carpets supplied the floors, and the Evergreen Art Café helped the young volunteers put together the menu for the celebration lunch and prepare it all. The partnership with DHL is expected to be ongoing, and we are most grateful for their support. DHL are funding food hygiene training for the volunteers as well.
“The young volunteers will be running a café during club activities, especially our ‘Friday clubs’ which are supported by Daventry Town Council, and the police.”
