A youngster at an academy in Daventry has scooped top prize in a national competition all about young people speaking out on issues.

Fourteen-year-old Lauren Marshall who goes to The Parker E-ACT Academy based on Ashby Road, won the YouSpeak award finishing first ahead of schools across the country.

It was a double achievement for the academy as another pupil Luke Craner, also from Year 10, was a finalist in the same competition.

As well as going down to London for the competition, they also received a tour of Wembley for their efforts while Lauren took home the trophy following the event, on February 14.

One of the academy’s English teachers Natasha Pickup said: “Lauren impressed judges with a speech about equality and was crowned champion of the public speaking event.”

There was a wide range of topics covered in the speeches ranging from equality to global warming.

However according to the judges it was the speech from Lauren which stood out from the crowd and helped her lift the trophy.

Ms Pickup added: “The event saw students from schools around the country compete for the coveted prize of best public speaker.

“The speeches delivered by the youngsters were of a very high standard, but Lauren’s speech won based on an outstanding balance of content, structure, style and delivery.”
