Youngsters turning to a life of crime

CHILDREN as young as 11 have been committing burglaries and selling the stolen goods in Daventry.

Northamptonshire Police told the Daventry Express they had caught children involved in serious crime including domestic burglary and selling stolen goods on the Southbrook estate.

Inspector Julia Potts, head of the Daventry sector, said: "We know that stolen property is being offered locally in town, some by kids as young

as 11 or 12, particularly on the Southbrook estate. And they are taking these items in burglaries themselves.

"It's being offered around and I am appealing for people that are offered this property or know that people are offering it or receiving property to get in touch with us or Crimestoppers.

"These are items like electrical goods, games consoles and perfume that are being offered at low prices.

"It is the people who buy these items that provide a market for the burglars in the first place and they can be jailed for 14 years."

Alan Hills, who represents the Southbrook on Daventry District Council and Northamptonshire County Council, said: "It is very worrying that children as young as this are being involved in criminal activities as serious as this.

"But I don't think the problem will be confined to the Southbrook."

Police are setting up a new panel led by residents for people on the Southbrook, along with the Grange, Drayton, Stefen Hill and town centre,

to raise issues. The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 25 at 6.30pm at the Southbrook Community Centre in Hood Road.

Lynne Taylor, leader of Daventry Town Council, said: "It is important that the community is involved in tackling problems like this, otherwise

they can spread and affect any estate in the town.

"The panels are important because they allow police to get information from local people so they can target resources to tackle problems like this.

"People can be worried to speak out and give information, but that's just taking the ostrich approach."
