Youngsters raising charity awareness

PUPILS at Brington Primary School dressed up as skeletons in a bid to raise awareness of a rare medical condition.

They donated money to wear the unusual outfits to raise funds for Scoliosis Association UK.

Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spine is curved from side to side. It normally
develops during teenage years.

Nearly £250 was raised at the event held on Thursday last week and the school’s administrator was delighted with the response.

Carol Knowles, who’s 19-year-old daughter Sarah suffers from the condition, said: “Scoilosis is something which people do not know a lot about but it can cause a lot of aches and pains and a hump back.

“She has never let it effect her though, she has been determined to never let it hold her back even though she has got all these rods in her back.

“She wants to be an actress and is just about to take a role in pantomime and has been in a film. She has just kept a positive attitude throughout.

“It was really good of the school to raise funds for the charity and we were really pleased with the total raised at the event.”

The condition also affects a former pupil at the school, Natalie Cox.

Her mother, Karen Munton, who is now a teaching assistant there, said: “The day was good because I was able to bring some of the x-rays in and explain a little more about the condition.

“Some of the older children were really fascinated and they were able to ask questions about it.

“I think it was a really good experience for them to learn about it and I am really pleased the school was able to raise some funds and help out other families.

The school was joined by Harlestone Primary School and Millway Primary School in Duston to raise the funds. They raised £100 and £141 respectively.
