Youngsters from village school go green for competition

The children’s follow-up work was judged for the awarding of the annual Gallie Prize, which commemorates a past headteacher of the school.

Competition organiser Alan Mawer said the standard of the children’s entries was higher than ever.

He said: “In judging the entries we were looking for information about the different environments in the pocket park and the landscape it is set in as well as for interesting ways of communicating the information.”

The winner of the first prize and Gallie Competition cup holder was Elena Tennant, who created a 3D model linked with information cards.

Runner-up was Poppy Craig with her display which included good photos and drawings linked to descriptive text and a thoughtful poem.

Joe Adams made a model of an allotment in a lid. It was awarded highly commended because of his attention to detail.

As well as the vegetable plots he included a shed with a rain butt and a compost heap with a spade demonstrating excellent model-making skills. Libby Walton’s poster entry was also highly commended. The judges liked the details in her drawing of an allotment; old CDs as bird-scarers and netting to protect crops.
