A WOMAN died on the M1 near Daventry after a van collided with the car she was in.

The woman who died in the accident has been named by police as Kathleen Ann Coton, 64, from Nottinghamshire.

She was the passenger in a silver Mercedes C Class, which was involved in a collision with a white Mercedes Sprinter van, one mile south of Watford Services.

The collision took place at around 1.20pm on Thursday last week, when the Mercedes was parked on the hard shoulder.

The 70-year-old woman driving the car and a 70-year-old man who was also a passenger in the car, both sustained life threatening injuries.

They both remain in hospital with serious injuries.

The 30-year-old-man who was driving the Sprinter van was arrested by Northamptonshire Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

As a result of the collision, police closed the southbound section of the motorway from junction 18 at Crick down to junction 16 at Northampton.

The accident caused huge traffic problems on all surrounding roads including the A5 and A45 at Daventry for the majority of the afternoon and into the evening.

Witnesses are asked to call the police’s Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615.
