We’ve got stamps campaign licked

A QUARTER of a million stamps have been collected in the Daventry district to help support poor communities around the world.
The 250,000 stamps have been donated in just two years to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
They will now be converted into cash to help those in countries less fortunate.
Branch president Des Waddington began the ‘Used Stamps Appeal’.
He said: “It’s quite amazing really.
“Just to put it into context this amount of stamps will buy a school room for a village in Africa.
“On top of that it will also be enough to provide either a greenhouse to grow vegetables or a pump which will provide fresh water out of the ground.”
The Daventry Express has also been heavily involved in the campaign by encouraging people to donate stamps to the office on the High Street.
Mr Waddington added: “The high majority of stamps donated have gone through the Daventry Express which has been fantastic for this campaign.
“The way it works is we have about 20 people here who process all the stamps. We cut off the excess bits and sort them into piles before they go off to two charities, Oxfam and Leukaemia Care.
“The charities then identify stamps which make up complete sets and sell those in their shops.
“Other stamps may also have value and will go off to auction or be sold to stamp collectors. But the high majority are sold off for little amounts of money, which really does all add up.
“Some of the stamps are also scrapped and recycled for their silk content which really is incredible.
“It’s a great project and so worthwhile. We’ve had support from so many people and lots of local businesses in the area. For example Braunston school recently donated around 15,000 stamps.
“We are just so grateful to the people of the Daventry district for all their support.”
