Village crematorium plan rejected

COUNCILLORS unanimously voted to throw out plans to build a crematorium in open countryside near Rugby.

Rugby Borough Council’s planning committee met at the Town Hall last night (Wednesday) to discuss a controversial application to build a crematorium on land off Moor Lane in Willoughby.

More than 100 villagers from Willoughby and neighbouring areas filled the council chamber to hear the decision that they have been fighting against for so long.

The plans included a crematorium building, an external burial area and memorial garden and a 64-space car park and access road.

Concerns were raised about traffic and the fact that the development would be built in open countryside.

Councillors unanimously voted against the plans which was followed by a round of applause from the public gallery.

Speaking outside the Town Hall after the meeting, Mike Thomas, chairman of Willoughby Parish Council said: “I’m so relived. Although it had been recommended for refusal you just never know what individual councillors might think about it.”
