Children at a village school have been mixing maths and art into their work in the lead up to World Book Day.
Staverton Primary School turned the week over to activities themed around books, and they were not the only ones going batty for books.
Staverton’s literary co-ordinator, Kerry Emery, said: “We’re doing book week, and all the classes have chosen a book that matches with their interests. In my class there’s a lot of boys and girls that like football, so the book is called Football Fever.
“Obviously book week involves a lot of literacy work, but we’ve also tried to involve other areas of the curriculum.
“For instance, the book my class is doing has lots of links to maths – league tables and goal differences, etc. Tying maths problems down to something in the real world really helps the children get interested and involved in it.
“We had a ‘no pens’ day on Monday, so it was all about speaking and listening, maths, using drama and expressing themselves in different ways
“There’s also been an art focus. One class is reading 365 Penguins, and they’re making penguins. My class is going to be using the school colours to come up with new designs for the school football kit.
“Mixing in these different subjects has gone really well. They’ve absolutely loved doing it all. They’ve been very motivated, particularly the ones in my class who follow a football team!”
