Town MP to take charge of charity football match

DAVENTRY MP Chris Heaton-Harris will referee this year’s charity match between Daventry Town Reds and Manchester United Legends.

The MP will take charge of the fixture, which will take place at Communications Park on Sunday, May 20.

Players who will appear in the Manchester United team include former Republic of Ireland international Dennis Irwin, “Busby Babe” Sammy McIlroy, and Frank Stapleton, who made 223 appearances for Manchester United.

Mr Heaton-Harris, who is a qualified referee, said: “It’s a great game to be involved in.

“It will be fantastic to be on the same pitch as the Manchester United Legends and I hope a lot of people will come down on the day and support the club and the charities the event is raising money for.”

The home team will be made up of people from across Daventry and Northampton who have raised sponsorship money to take part in the game.

Among those on the team will be the leader of Daventry District Council Chris Millar.

The 58-year-old is expected to play one 35-minute half against the ex-professionals.

He said: “I’ve got a bad leg and bad knees, but I used to play quite a lot when I was young, so it should be fun.

“And I’ve been a Manchester United fan all my life, so playing against people like Dennis Irwin will be amazing.”
