Three weekly bin collection plan for Daventry district gets backing from councillors

Daventry District Council’s strategy group recommended the 1-2-3 collection scheme at its meeting on Thursday evening.

The proposed future collection scheme will now go to full council, and if approved there will be used as the basis for tendering the contract to replace the current bin and recycling service when it expires in 2018.

The ‘1-2-3’ service proposes (1) a weekly food waste collection, (2) a two-weekly recycling collection using a full-size compartmentalised wheelie bin rather than the current boxes and (3) a three-weekly general waste collection.

It is also being proposed that a separate garden waste collection service will also be made available at an additional cost for those who want it.

The council says entering a new contract with the same service as households currently receive would require an extra £1.25 million per year in costs, due to the lower prices being paid for recycled materials.
