The owner of an Indian restaurant has been left shocked following a fight which resulted in the arrest of two youngsters for using racial language and threatening behaviour.

Amin Islam, who runs the Shahi Lounge in the High Street, Daventry, spoke to the Daventry Express following a fight outside its premises on Friday night.

Jordan Swain, 19, from Jennings Close, was sentenced to eight weeks at a young offenders institution at a hearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He pleaded guilty to assaulting a man and to threatening behaviour using racist language.

A 17-year-old, who can’t be named for legal reasons, also pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour and using racist language. He is due to be sentenced on Wednesday, February 27 at Northampton Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Islam said his customers were left scared following the incident.

He said: “From what I saw, there was a fight that started outside the restaurant. They then came inside and started fighting.

“The first concern was for the safety of the customers as there were children in the dining room. We moved people to the back of the restaurant, but it was very scary. There were windows smashed, chairs and tables thrown around.”

The windows have been boarded although the restaurant is still open.

Mr Islam was full of praise for the reaction of the local community.

He said: “We are really grateful for all of the support we’ve received from the local community.”

“I have had a lot of texts and phone calls from the regular customers asking how I am. And we have had people popping in. We have had visits from a lot of other local traders and from councillors with offers of any help.”

Mr Islam said he was now looking into installing CCTV to protect his business.

Sergeant Sam Dobbs, from Daventry Safer Community Team, said: “We are pleased a sentence has been passed for this incident.

“Incidents of this nature in Daventry are extremely rare and there is no suggestion that businesses run by Asians in the town are now under threat because of what happened on Friday night.

“We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or racism in Daventry.”
