NORTHAMPTONSHIRE County Council will look at whether the Birmingham to Northampton rail route should be ‘devolved’ and run locally.
The council will discuss the proposal, which would see Long Buckby Station run by the consortium, at its cabinet meeting.
Similar ‘devolved’ routes are Merseyrail Electric and London Overground.
The benefits could be extra train services to Birmingham, particularly at peak hours where there are gaps in the timetable at the moment.
However, under current rail rules the new consortium, based in the Midlands, could not run services to London, unlike the current London Midland Trains service. Instead, the Northampton to London route would be run by another new company. This could mean the end of direct trains from Long Buckby to London, something the council says it will not back.
