Tackling litter and vandalism on playing field in Daventry

Issues including arson, fly-tipping, litter and vandalism will be tackled during a day of action at a Daventry playing field.

The Daventry District and South Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership has organised the event at the Fishponds field on the Southbrook estate in Daventry on Thursday June 2.

Large fly-tipped items will be cleared from around the edges of the field during the event, which runs from 10am to 2pm.

Organisers are also appealing for community-spirited people to come forward to help local volunteers with a litter pick.

Daventry District Council’s environmental improvement team will attend the event to offer advice about littering and dog fouling.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service will be there together with a fire engine and crew to offer fire safety and arson prevention advice.

People can find out more about volunteering opportunities from Angie Farrant, the Clean and Green Project coordinator based at Daventry Volunteer Centre.

There will be further support on the day from Northamptonshire Police and the Futures Housing Group.

The Northamptonshire Waste Partnership will also be running waste education sessions at Danetre and Southbrook Learning Village (DSLV) following the event, to help teach pupils to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Ian Vincent, chairman of the community safety partnership, said: “The area is a hotspot for littering and fly-tipping and much of the work on the day will focus on clearing that up, but there have been a number of incidents of arson and vandalism at the playing field in recent months, and so the day is also an opportunity for members of the police and fire service to engage with the community on those issues.

“Days of Action such as this have proved successful in the past in tackling problem areas and I would encourage residents to get involved.”
