Sleigh’s latest gift to the town

CASH from the rotary club’s charity Santa sleigh collection will benefit 19 local groups.

The collection raised a massive £9,878.87 in the run-up to Christmas, an increase on the £8,663 raised in 2011.

The sleigh route, organised by the Danetre Rotary Club, is also supported by volunteers representing the charities.

The total raised is then divided up based on the number of collection hours put in per group.

Bob Snedker, from the Rotary Club, said: “We, at Daventry Rotary Club, thank everyone involved in enabling Santa to carry out his reconnaissance survey of Daventry and the surrounding villages during December.

“Special thanks to the Daventry Express for printing the schedule and publishing news and photos of his journey.

“Feedback from Saint Nick Headquarters showed that, of the parents surveyed, 98 per cent reported that the children had been well behaved and so Santa visited them again on December 25.

HQ also reported that his little helpers had collected almost £10,000, to be shared out between 19 local charities.”

From the total, £5,194 will go to Danetre Rotary Club, but the largest amounts being distributed are going to Daventry Citizens’ Advice Bureau (£517) and the Pete Spencer Helping Hands Memorial Fund (£453).

Anne Bamfield from Daventry CAB said: “We’ve been doing the sleigh collection for several years now. We’re absolutely delighted to be able to continue to do it and raise money for our much-used services in Daventry.”

Ian Spencer, who runs the Helping Hands fund said: “It’s the first year we have been involved with Santa’s sleigh.

“All the Helping Hands volunteers enjoyed their time out collecting and I’m very grateful for the amount of money received. A big thank you to Danetre Rotary for inviting us to be part of it and we hope to do it again next year.”
