Daventry District Council (DDC) has defended a plan it supports to redevelop the tennis courts at New Street Recreation Ground by stating it is in keeping with an original legal covenant governing the site.
Simon Bowers, DDC’s business manager, said: “New Street Rec is held by Daventry District Council for use as a recreation ground. This is consistent with the purpose for which the ground was transferred to DDC’s predecessor in 1913.
“Tennis and other recreational activities have been provided at the Rec for many years and the current proposals, if approved, would see that continue.”
Residents of Inlands Rise, who oppose the scheme, have claimed building a dedicated tennis facility on a recreational area could be in breach of the covenant.
