Safety fears over collapsing building
Calls for action have been made over a building in Daventry which appears to be partly held up by wooden safety supports.
The property stands in Warwick Street, close to the junction with St James Street.
Large wooden struts have been in place for a while in an attempt to hold up the front of the building, but now ward councillor Chris Over is calling for action.
He said: “The wooden supports were put up by Daventry District Council because they were concerned about the state of the building.
“They’ve been there a while, but the building is on the edge of the town centre, and is visible by residents and visitors coming into the town to shop.
“It’s unsightly and sends the wrong message about Daventry as a place in which to spend time or do business.
“It’s also near a primary school, so there are lots of children and parents walking past it every day.
“The buildings have been falling into disrepair for a number of years; a visit to the site will show falling cladding and masonry.
“My concern is for people walking and driving past it, plus the chance of someone getting inside and there being further collapse.
“If part or all of it came down, then that would cause serious disruption to the town, and obviously the potential of serious injury or worse.
“We don’t want a tragedy on our hands.
“The problem we appear to have is that the company which ran these buildings before looks like it has been wound up, now DDC has to try and find the owner for the building or the land.
“In the meantime the state of the building will only get worse as it looks like there is no maintenance being carried out at all.”
