Saddling up for charity

FIVE cyclists will pedal more than 200 miles in memory of their friend who died following a car crash.

Nick Smilie, Tom Henderson, Joe Haynes and Ben Chambers from Woodford Halse and Fraser Kidd, originally from Daventry but now living in Bournemouth, will be raising money for the Daniel Worrall Memorial Trust.

The quintet will set off on Thursday, April 9, to cycle 240 miles from Woodford to Bournemouth and back. They aim to get to Bournemouth in two days and will cycle back after spending a couple of nights in the town, arriving home on Easter Monday (April 13).

Mr Smilie said: “We have not done that much cycling between us so we know it is going to be painful.

“The thing that will keep us all going is that we know we are doing something for a good cause.”

Keen footballer and cricketer Daniel, 20, from Woodford died following a car crash in January and the trust was set up to improve sports facilities in the village.

Mr Smilie said: “There is not a lot for the youngsters in the village. The buses to both Banbury and Daventry are every hour and we wanted to do something to make things better for the youngsters.

“It is something I think Daniel would have been very keen on us doing because he was a keen sportsman. He was a bit of a role model for the younger members of the clubs he played for.”
