Reporting road issues online could save the council thousands

THOUSANDS of pounds could be saved by using an online service from Northamptonshire County Council.

By the public reporting road and highway issues online using the council’s Street Doctor Service it is estimated the council could save up to £2.70 every time.

Residents can use Street Doctor online to report issues 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service providers users with a reference number which can be used to track the progress of their enquiry, they can also receive email updates.

On average, the Street Doctor service receives around 2,000 contacts each month but currently only around 30% of these are online.

This means that if more people access Street Doctor online rather than calling the council, it could save thousands of pounds.

Cabinet member for customer and community services Councillor Heather Smith said: “Street Doctor is just one example of the many services available online that traditionally would have been done over the telephone. We are all used to doing more things online, whether it’s checking a bank account or booking a train ticket, and contacting the council is no different.

“At a time when we need to find ways to reduce costs and save money, it makes good sense to encourage people to go online instead of calling. Not only is this usually quicker and easier for our customers, as it enables them to get in touch 24/7, it also saves money for the council, and therefore taxpayers, at the same time.

The council also launched an iPhone and Android app and a mobile browser last year to expand their online services.

Roads and highways-related issues such as a potholes, damaged pavements, broken traffic lights or signage issues can be reported online however street lighting issues are now managed by Balfour Beatty and should be reported via Lighting Northamptonshire.
