A rapist from Daventry has been jailed for 17 years for a number of sex assaults.

Peter Wilson, 33, pleaded guilty to nine counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault which took place between 2008 and December of last year.

His crimes only stopped when Wilson, of Southbrook, Daventry, handed himself into the town police station last year, telling police: “I know I’m going down for a long time.”

On Tuesday, Wilson was given a 17-year prison term, of which a quarter will be spent on licence.

In sentencing him, Judge Lynn Tayton QC said: “This is one of the most serious cases of sex offending I have had to deal with.”

She added: “Offences of this nature are not simply about your own sexual gratification.

“You seem to have very little understanding of the impact of your offending.”

In mitigation, Tim Nutley admitted there was ‘very little’ he could put forward to mitigate for his client, though asked the judge took into account the early plea.

A spokeswoman for one of the victim’s family said: “Now we can try to get closure and move on because we know he’s not going to be coming out for a long time.”
