A WEEKEND of music and other events drew the crowds to a town youth centre.

The Phoenix Centre in Ashby Road opened its doors for three days of music and activities over the weekend, with DJs, indoor skate ramps and live music all organised by the young people themselves.

Matthew Johnson, a youth worker at the centre, said: “It was a fantastic event.

“It was all organised by the young people who use the centre and they did a great job. They came up with the ideas and sorted it all out too.

“Amelia Spalding, who’s 19, is our event manager so she was in charge for the three days. Joe Paterson was in charge of publicity and we ended up with a good mixed crowd there, and a few adults as well. And Charlie Spalding was doing the lighting and sound and it looked like a professional event. The light set-up he had was just fantastic.

“We had some great bands – Paperplanes and Laguna Sunrise were two of the top acts.

“Everyone seemed to have a good time and be enjoying it all.

“I’m sure the young people will build on this and the partnerships they’ve created to make next year’s event even bigger.”
