IT WAS a short back and sides for one woman trying to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.

On Friday Sharon Evans, from Chiltern Road in Daventry, got her long hair cut off at Rebel Hair in Daventry to raise awareness of the cancer, which is dubbed the ‘silent killer’.

She said: “At the moment three of my friends are suffering with ovarian cancer, and my very best friend of 30 years who I met while teaching at Guilsborough Primary School – Sandra Woodward – died from it.

“The thing is the symptoms can be misleading and people can get diagnosed with the wrong things.

“For instance, one of my friends was being treated for IBS but it wasn’t working. When they opened her up for an operation they realised it was cancer instead.

“The problem is that because people don’t get diagnosed quickly, the mortality rate for ovarian cancer is high. They call it the ‘silent killer’.

“I’d say to anyone who’s got trouble down there, that is your body’s way of saying something’s wrong. You can get a CA-125 blood test which will identify it.”

Adding: “I’ve had long hair for around 13 years.

“I was told that if they could cut off more than 10ins then it can be donated to a charity which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair through chemotherapy.

“So I decided to grow my hair beforehand – It was down to my waist!

“And someone said they’d sponsor me even more if I had a bit of my head shaved, so what I’ve got now is shaved short at the back.

“It’s a bit cold, but I was donated a lovely hat by the This ‘n’ That youth project in Long Buckby!”

Anyone who wants to make a donation to Ovarian Cancer Research can do so at Rebel Hair, in St Johns Square.
