A massive cannabis factory estimated at £500,000 has been discovered by police officers on the Royal Oak Industrial Estate in Daventry.

Officers found the factory producing the class B drug in an industrial unit on Lanchester Way on Tuesday afternoon. The force has said the street value of the plants is estimated at £500,000.

Around 600 mature plants were discovered in the building with more than 1,000 found in total including younger plants.

Sergeant Sam Dobbs, from the Daventry Safer Community Team, said: “We were investigating a report that the premises was insecure.

“From there and through further investigations, it became clear that this was being used for the cultivation of cannabis.”

There was an overnight police guard while the electricity was disconnected on Tuesday evening. Forensics were on site yesterday (Wednesday) morning and officers were on the scene clearing the factory throughout yesterday.

Sgt Dobbs added: “This was a rented property and this is a lesson to say that if you are renting out a property, either yourself or the agent should be carrying out regular background checks.”

No one was discovered at the site and no arrests have yet been made.

If anyone suspects there is a cannabis factory in their area, people can call 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
