PUPILS and staff from the Danetre and Southbrook Learning Village set off on a trip to Uganda last week where they hope to bring fresh water to local people.

The team of six will spend 11 days in the market town in central Uganda working alongside the King of Kings School building a new safe water source.

Head of Geography Sandra Kelly, who visited the town two years ago, said she and the pupils will be getting stuck in while they are there.

She said: “Last time I went to Iganga we were able to bring clean water to 3,000 people, it was brilliant and this time we will be getting more stuck into the digging, working in the school and bringing over mosquito nets for orphans.”

The team will also be taking over wedding dresses donated by Jean Morratt to enable the local orphanage to make a profit by selling them.

Pupil Bryony Magee, 17, said: “I am really looking forward to going, I have wanted to do something like this for ages and have been working at Daventry Library to raise the £1,300 needed to go.”

The team have held a promise auction, mufti day and staff did a tandem parachute jump to raise funds for the trip.

Religion and philosophy teacher Debra Budd said: “Having the chance to raise money for others and then to see where that money goes is a fantastic opportunity for us.”

The school worked with local Daventry charity Friends of Iganga to organise the trip.

Pupils Becky Turner, Sinead Miles and Mary Sanderson have also flown over to the town in East Africa.
