Public inquiry for M1 junction

A public inquiry to consider objections to the proposed M1 Junction 19 (Catthorpe) improvement border opens on March 5.

The Highways Agency says work is necessary due to the fact 157,000 vehicles pass through the junction daily and this was expected to increase to over 225,000 by 2029.

It also says the current layout sees frequent queues and a mixing of long and short distance traffic.

The plan will see improvements made to traffic flows, but not include an ‘all direc

tions’ junction for the M6, M1 and A14, rather traffic heading in certain directions (such as north on the M1 to head east on the A14) would have to loop back on itself on the motorway from junction 20, or go through villages.

The inquiry provides the opportunity for all points of view to be heard and considered before recommendations are put to the Secretary of State for Transport and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

The inquiry will be held at the Holiday Inn at Junction 18 of the M1 at Crick starting at 10am. The public inquiry inspector is Mrs Diane Lewis.

There will be opportunities for those affected to speak in support of, make representations about or object to the proposals. Any alternatives proposed by objectors will also be considered by the inspector – these include different configurations and the ‘all directions’ option.

Further information about the proposals, together with a map showing the preferred route, is available at www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/m1-junction-19-improvement-scheme.
